No-one knows a car better than its driver and no-one knows a car brand better than those who work with it on a daily basis. In a unique experiment we have brought both together and asked Lookers employees who drive the brands they represent, what they really think of them.
In this article – the first in a compelling series – our full beam headlights are fixed on Audi. This award winning company has been exciting and delighting British drivers since the 1960’s and now offers 42 of the most stylish, flawless and dynamic vehicles, regularly topping polls as one of Britain’s favourite car manufacturers.
Winning a brace of awards recently from ‘What Car?’, the Audi TT Coupé was named 'Best Coupé of the Year', while the Audi A3 Sportback e-tron scooped 'Best Electric Car of the Year' and the Audi A3 Cabriolet secured the 'Best Convertible of the Year'.
While the plaudits paint an impressive picture, what do our drivers really think?
Michael is a Training & Development Partner and has worked with Lookers for 8 months. He currently drives an Audi A3 Sport.
“My car is almost 5 months old and I have had it since new. I like the brand - it has a lot of appeal to people – and the looks of the car are fantastic. For a 1.4 litre the engine is gutsy yet very quiet. I don’t have a stand out feature as such but I enjoy that people are interested in my car. When you say you drive an Audi people always want to chat about it.
I have been driving for 10 years and this is the 8th car I’ve owned and it is by far the best car I have driven, with the Leon FR which I previously had, a close second. I would have no hesitation in recommending the A3 Sport to other drivers.
It looks good, drives well, is cheap to insure and economical to run. I honestly don’t think I would buy another brand after driving an Audi”
Dad of one, Graeme, is head of Digital Marketing and has been with the company for 16 months. He is currently driving a 5 month old Audi A5 Quattro Black Edition Plus which he has had from new.
“The drive for me is the thing I like most, it’s very comfortable for long journeys but still has the performance when you want it. Even though it’s a 2 door it’s also quite practical as I can get my daughter’s car seat in the back and it can seat 4 adults reasonably comfortably. The level of spec on it is great as well. I like how good the automatic tiptronic gearbox is.
I hadn’t owned an automatic before but now wouldn’t drive a manual as the speed of the gear changes make the car seem much more responsive. This is definitely the best car I have had I’ve owned BMW’s in the past that were similar with regards to cost and spec but I would say I definitely prefer the Audi as the drive is better and the equipment in the Black Edition is great. If you were to ask my 4 year old daughter what the stand out feature on the car is, she would say the DVD player so she can watch Frozen!”
Robin is Aftersales Manager and has worked for the business in various Lookers locations for 27 years. Based in Glasgow he currently drives an Audi A7.
“My A7 looks amazing and I have had it from new. In my opinion this is the best looking car in the Audi range and drives incredibly well. Without hesitation I would recommend this car 110%! The look and feel of the A7 is excellent, I went on the A7 CLT training in Munich, we carried out comparison road tests with other equivalent make and models …i.e. Jaguar, BMW, Lexus and Mercedes Benz and the A7 was so much better in every area.”
Tracey has been with Lookers for a year and drives a 1.4 litre A1 Sportline which she has had since new.
“Although compact, the A1 drives and handles like a much bigger car. The steering is light and responsive, gear changes are smooth and there is a real kick when it’s needed! I love all the little features – the sensors which switch on the windscreen wipers when you need them, through to the autodialer; for me it enhances the quality of the driving experience.
I previously had a Honda Civic which was always my benchmark and while I actually think the styling of the A1 matches the Honda, the handling (on the Audi) is definitely superior. It’s hard to image driving another brand and I would absolutely recommend the A1 to those who enjoy style, comfort and technology.”
Gordon is Workshop Quality Controller based in Glasgow and has worked for the group in different locations for 15 years. Proving that Audi also appeals to those who like older models, Gordon drives a 14 year old A4 Avant 1.9tdi.
“I have owned my A4 for 10 years now and it has been very reliable. It’s never broken down or failed to start, has good mpg, still drives really well, carries a large roof box, canoe rack and takes 3 adults and 3 bikes easily! By comparison to other cars I have driven it holds its own. It still pulls well (original turbo and clutch at 132,000 miles and handles great as it has sports suspension. For its time this was an outstanding car”
Derek is Head of Business for Audi Approved Used. This self-confessed ‘petrol head’ has been with the company for over 2 years.
“I drive an Audi RS4 Avant which is 3 months old. I put a lot of time into picking it. My current is a beautiful colour of blue and has lots of toys on it including panoramic sunroof , exclusive paint ,sports pack, active cruise control ,aluminium pack ,& 21inch rotor wheels. My favourite aspect though is the sports pack. This is my forth RS4 in 2 years and is definitely my ‘go-to’ car. For those who love driving, this should definitely be on their list!”
