New design features include revised front and rear bumpers and a slick three bar grille along with new taillights and body mouldings. The effect is an exterior that belies its modest starting price. Newer models have also had some work done on softening the ride and the New Kia Sorento now performs much better thanks to its modified steering and suspension. There's enough room for five with plenty of shoulder space and the cargo area is equally impressive at a maximum of 1,849 litres.

There's an updated version of the 2.5 litre diesel giving it a punchy 21% more power than before. At 168bhp, it's brisk out of the blocks, with peak torque at 392Nm coming at a low 2,000rpm. Fuel return stands up well too, at 35.8mpg on a combined cycle. The 3.3 litre V6 is thirstier, but with an extra 48bhp more than the previous unit and capable of hitting 60mph in just 8.9 seconds it's the more muscular option.

Safety features are at a high level and ESP, active head restraints and front seatbelt pre-tensioners are all available. The centre stack is now home to dual zone air conditioning and a double JVC CD player - not bad for a budget conscious purchase. Go to the range topping XT trim and soft leather upholstery and wood effect trims transform the interior into something altogether plusher.
