Checking the Safety Rating of a New Car

The benchmark for the safety of all vehicles sold in the UK is the European New Car Assessment Programme safety rating – more commonly known as Euro NCAP. When choosing a new car, researching the model's rating and safety equipment beforehand could cement your decision to buy.

Euro NCAP evaluates cars separately on adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, pedestrian protection and safety assist. An overall safety score out of five stars is also provided. The scores needed to pass Euro NCAP testing are higher than the European minimum for vehicle safety – all models that do well easily exceed these benchmarks.

The tests carried out became stricter in 2012, and models that achieved a five-star rating following the updates are widely considered to be even more secure.

Viewing the standard equipment list for the vehicle you're interested in will confirm its suitability for your needs. Family drivers may appreciate the inclusion of ISOFIX child seat attachments and child-proof door locks, for example. The continuing technology and engineering developments by manufacturers bring more protective and intelligent features to each next-generation vehicle.
