What to look for when buying an ex-demo car

When it comes to buying an approved used car there are many options to consider. One option that many people may not know of is buying an ex demonstration car from your local dealership. Car showrooms will often have a selection of models that were previously used as display models in their showrooms available for sale to the public. Many of these models will be almost brand new and may be branded by the dealership as 'nearly new' cars.

Advantages of buying an ex-demo car

The main advantage of buying an ex-demo car is that it will have been kept in the best possible condition and should have no visual faults. Unlike a used car, an ex-demo car won't have had any previous owners meaning the car will be in the same condition as when it was brand new and will have a lot less miles on the clock. At Lookers all of our approved used cars are fully checked and tested before being sold, however there may be minor dents and scratches from the previous owner. An ex-demo car shouldn't have this problem as it will have been kept in top condition whilst on the showroom floor so to entice buyers.

The main selling point for ex-demo cars is its looks; the exterior should be clean, scrape free and have no dents. It's not only looks that can make buying an ex-demo car a great purchase, many dealerships will want to showcase the best aspects of a model, the ex-demo car is generally chosen with its best features and systems. Some, many or all of these may be optional extras and upgrades you won't find in the standard version. It's true that other drivers have customised their models - yet an ex-demonstration version could be a top-of-the-range vehicle for a great price. Discounts on ex-demo cars can range from anything to 10% to 70% meaning you could be getting a great deal on a nearly new car.

What to look out for

  • Remember to check who the car is registered to; if it has been registered with a previous owner make sure you get a V5C certificate.
  • Check the age of the car, an ex-demo car should have very little mileage on it as it's spent the majority of its time in the showroom on display. There may be some miles on the clock but these will probably be delivery miles. If the car does have a lot of mileage, ask the dealer why this is.
  • Do some research into the model you are interested in. If there is a brand new model about to be released it gives you a better chance of haggling on the price, as the dealer will want it sold before the new model arrives.
