More and more cars are being built with extra security measures to provide solutions to the high-tech equipment that is being used by criminals to break into them. Experienced car thieves can bypass many older security systems, so owners who are worried about the safety of their vehicles should upgrade their security on a regular basis.

The effect of false car alarms

Many people believe that the car alarm is no longer a valid method of security. This is because most of us do not pay any attention when an alarm goes off, due to the vast number of false alarms that can be heard almost every day.

Unfortunately, many car owners set up their alarm systems so sensitively that they respond the slightest vibrations and movements. As a result, the devices go off in response to factors that have nothing to do with an attempted break-in.

Studies have shown that most alarm systems are set off by would be car thieves only five per cent of the time.

Advanced car alarm systems

Many advanced car alarms have the ability to identify sounds that are more likely to be thieves, such as broken glass. Specialist sensors can also be installed to measure specific pressure levels on a vehicle. These can be adjusted to match the amount of pressure that someone would likely use if they were attempting to unlock the car.

Installing a car alarm

Most new cars come with a standard sensor trigger installed. This is the most basic form of car alarm and will set off a siren if the sensors are tripped, for example, if the door or windows are opened. Older cars do not have any security system; however, a basic alarm can be installed for a small one-time fee. Even if a driver does not care much for the actual security of their car, having an alarm installed can be seen as an investment, due to the savings that can be made on insurance premiums.

The benefits of car alarm systems

Although many of the triggers that set off car alarms are false they will still act as a deterrent to most criminals. There are also other benefits to be had by having a security system installed; the most appealing being the savings on insurance costs. Many insurance companies offer reduced fees, as they believe that having a car alarm installed in a vehicle reduces the risk of it being stolen or vandalised.
