Avoid fatigue and remain safe on the road

Driver fatigue is responsible for a large number of accidents on the UK's roads each year, and such incidents are completely avoidable with greater consideration for planned journeys. Here's how you can avoid tiredness and stay safe on the road:

  • safety should always come first, so if you're already tired, it may be worthwhile to delay a journey or not drive at all;
  • if you have to be up early to drive, go to bed earlier and make sure you get a full night's sleep;
  • plan your journeys to include a break of around 15 minutes, or enough time to relax and regain full concentration;
  • if you begin to feel tired, pull over to a safe place for a coffee or other high-caffeine drink to wake yourself up. It's worth waiting for ten to 15 minutes for the drink to have an effect;
  • avoid trips during hours you are usually asleep, as your body will be conditioned to want it;
  • share the driving if you can so there's the opportunity to relax or have a quick sleep in the passenger's seat.
