Engines
The Kia Sportage has gone through three different model generations, each of which offered various engine options. In the first generation of Kia Sportage, a pair of inline-four cylinder petrol engines was offered, both of which were 2.0 litre. There was also a 2.0 litre diesel engined option.
For the second generation of Kia Sportage, the engine options vary a little more. A 2.0 litre inline-four is available, as a petrol V6 and an inline-four cylinder diesel.
In terms of the third generation, the engine options offered are much more numerous. There are several gasoline direct injection (GDI) options, including a 1.6 litre inline-four and a 2.0 litre inline-four. The 2.0 litre version is also equipped with a turbo. The two turbo diesel engine options for the Kia Sportage, which are 1.7 litre and 2.0 litre, also have gasoline direct injection technology.
The two petrol options for the Kia Sportage are 2.0 litre and 2.4 litre and produce 164bhp and 175bhp, respectively.
The first generation of Kia Sportage features four-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmissions. The second generation offers the same pair of options, with the addition of a six-speed manual option. For the third generation, the transmission options are six-speed automatic or manual.
Safety
In terms of safety features, the Kia Sportage has a number of airbags, which are fitted in front and to the sides of the front seat passenger and driver. Isofix mounting-points are fitted for the safety of child passengers. Stability control is also an important safety feature of this vehicle. If a crash involving rollover should occur, the Kia Sportage is equipped with a feature that automatically tenses the seatbelts and deploys the airbags.
The Kia Sportage was named 'Top Safety Pick' by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in 2009. In most categories, the various versions of the Kia Sportage have performed very well in IIHS crash tests, if not flawlessly.
Style
The Kia Sportage is a compact SUV, though initially a two-door convertible option was also produced. The third generation of Kia Sportage is available in a two-door wagon style only.
In terms of the interior, the Kia Sportage has fairly standard features. The controls of the vehicle are well positioned and the speedometer is large and easy to read. Though the entry-level models tend to use less tactile materials for the controls, the interior of the Kia Sportage generally has an intuitive feel to it.
