Engines

There are two generations of Lexus IS and the engine options differ slightly between them. The first generation of this vehicle is available with a choice of two inline six cylinder engines, a 2.0 litre and a 3.0 litre. The 2.0 litre engine produces around 135bhp, while the 3.0 litre manages 220bhp. There is also a 2.0 litre inline four cylinder option for the first generation Lexus IS, which produces some 207bhp.

The transmission systems available in the first generation of the Lexus IS are four-speed automatic, five-speed manual, five-speed automatic and six-speed manual. 

The second generation of the Lexus IS features substantially more powerful engine options, the bulk of them being V6s. The 2.5 litre version of this engine produces 204bhp, the 3.0 litre version 252bhp and the 3.5 litre, some 305bhp. The most powerful option for this generation of the Lexus IS is a 5.0 litre V8, with no less than 417bhp. There is also an inline four engine available for the second generation Lexus IS; this being the entry level option, which produces a useful 177bhp. 

The range of transmissions options supplied with the second generation of the Lexus IS are a six-speed manual, six-speed automatic and an eight-speed automatic.

Safety

In US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash tests, the Lexus IS was awarded five stars out of five in terms of side driver and side rear passenger safety and four stars out of five in terms of frontal driver and frontal passenger impact safety. The vehicle also received the maximum rating of “Good” from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for impact testing. The structure of this car is substantially reinforced and is specifically designed to protect all its occupants in the event of an accident.

The Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) is a key safety feature of the Lexus IS.  This computerised system anticipates skids and other forms of instability and takes steps to correct it. Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), is able to correct steering irregularities on the part of the driver and is another of many important safety features fitted to this vehicle.  

Style

The first generation of the Lexus IS is available in a four-door saloon, as well as five-door estate car body style. In the second generation Lexus IS, two-door convertible and four-door saloon body styles are available.  

In terms of the exterior, there are several colour options available; they are, Starfire Pearl, Tungsten Pearl, Nebula Grey Pearl, Obsidian, Matador Red Mica and Deep Sea Mica.
