Engines

Over the three generations of the Lexus RX, the engine options have changed considerably. For the first generation there are two inline four cylinder options, a 2.2 litre and a 2.4 litre. The former is capable of 136bhp, while the latter produces 160bhp. The third engine option offered is a 3.0 litre V6, which has a power output of 190bhp. The only transmission system fitted to the first generation of the Lexus RX is a four-speed automatic. 

The engine options for the second generation of the Lexus RX are both V6s, the first being a 215bhp 3.3 litre and the second a 280bhp, 3.5 litre. A five-speed automatic transmission is fitted as standard to all models in the second generation Lexus RX.   

For the third generation of the Lexus RX, the entry level engine option is a 2.7 litre inline four, which produces a healthy 187bhp. There are two 3.5 litre V6 options available for this generation of the Lexus RX, a petrol and a petrol hybrid. The former develops a maximum of 280bhp, while the latter manages a creditable 245 hp. The standard transmission system supplied on the third generation Lexus RX is a six-speed automatic.      

Safety

The Lexus RX has an extensive list of safety features fitted as standard, such as an anti-lock braking system (ABS) and a number of strategically positioned airbags. There are also Isofix attachments in order to keep child passengers safe. 

Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) is another important safety feature, which is designed to correct steering errors made by the driver, thus helping to ensure a smoother ride. Traction Control (TRC) further helps to ensure that the ride is safe, even in the wintertime when roads may be muddy or icy. If weather conditions make it tricky to stop the vehicle safely, the Brake Assist System (BAS) helps to ensure braking is efficient as possible.   

Style

The Lexus RX is a crossover SUV with five doors. The steering wheel and upholstery of the vehicle are leather, as are the seats, which are electronically adjustable in eight different positions and also heated. Throughout, the interior is finished in a sleek, dark grey trim.

The steering wheel of the Lexus RX can be adjusted electronically, as can the rear view mirror.  The steering wheel, driver’s seat and external mirrors all have a memory function, which helps to ensure that the driver can instantly reset everything to his or her personal preferences when they step into the vehicle.
