On Thursday the 23rd June, we held the Kent and Sussex qualifier for the 2016 MercedesTrophy at Chart Hills golf club. The weather looked bleak in the morning having had a night of torrential rain, but thanks to superb drainage and the outstanding efforts of the Chart Hills greenkeepers we were able to tee-off on time at 11am.
Before starting guests were treated to a full English breakfast. It was a four ball shotgun start (players start at each hole simultaneously, working their way around the course) and each group was finished by 4:30PM. Throughout the day we were very lucky with the weather; the heavy downpours only re-appeared as dinner was being served with everyone safely inside. Roast beef with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes and vegetables followed by Eton mess was a delicious and fitting way to bring the day to a close.
It was an especially good day for Mr Cole who, thanks to the efforts of John Paul (Mercedes-Benz of Ashford), was handed the keys to his new ML-Class as he finished the course. We were also collecting money for Alzheimer’s Society, and thanks to many generous donations we managed to raise £1000.
We were able to announce 6 winners who will go through to the National Final qualifier, held at St Georges Hill golf club in Surrey. After this there is potential to progress to the National final, at the prestigious St Andrews in Scotland, and the World final held in Stuttgart; the home of Mercedes-Benz. Thank you to everyone who took part and to Craig Clarke, David Siddle, Justin Ruck, Nigel Barber and Joshua John for being hosts out on the course.
The winners were as follows:
Division 1 (scratch – 10 handicap)
Division 2 (11 – 18 handicap)
Division 3 (19 and over handicap)
