The experience
In terms for interior space the Volkswagen Golf is a tough act to follow. It can easily accommodate four adults to travel in luxury, there's even enough shoulder and legroom to get three in the back without feeling cramped. Volkswagen make the comfiest seats in the market and the plush upholstery makes this one of the most luxurious and relaxing drives on long journeys. And that's the real beauty of the Golf. It's incredibly nimble around town and on country roads, but it's also supremely confident and comfortable for motorway cruising. The Golf is the benchmark all other family hatches are trying to match.
The performance
Engine options open with a 1.4 litre petrol with 80PS available with entry level S models. It's a good runner, churning out 44mpg on a combined cycle and producing a fair 150g/km CO2. Next comes a 1.6 litre with 102PS followed by a turbocharged 1.4 TSI with 122PS. The turbo still goes easy at the pumps with 45mpg combined, finishes the 0 - 60mph sprint in under ten seconds and hits 200NM of torque at just 1500 revs. Diesel engines include a pair of 2.0 litre units with either 110PS or 140PS. Both are incredibly efficient, producing 57mpg combined and just 128k/km of particle emissions.
The technology
S model Golfs all include air conditioning, multifunction trip computer and slick body coloured door handles. Next stage SEs add cruise control, automatic exterior lights and dusk sensing interior dimmers. For front fog lights, alloy wheels and rear tinted windows you'll need to up a gear to the Volkswagen Golf sporty GT trim.
