An extra hour to gear up!

The clocks are set to go back one hour on Sunday 25 October at 2.00am and you’re wondering how to make the most of that extra hour. Will you spend it in bed, or will you do something extremely useful and sensible like check your car is geared up for winter?

With the end of British Summer Time, winter is just around the corner and even though autumn has just started, it's around this time of the year we start to notice the change in road conditions. So, now is the time to make sure your car is prepared for the winter precipitation that has yet to come.

4 Checks for Your Car:

1.Tyres – Your first barrier against slipping and sliding when the road gets wet are your tyres. October is National Tire Safety Month so we have put together some tips and answers to important questions showing how to check your tyres are safe. Read National Tyre Safety Month.

TYRE TIP: Tread depth can be easily checked with a 20p. Here's a picture to show you how simple it is:

2. Antifreeze - A necessity for the new season, ensuring your engine starts even if the temperature drops dramatically. Your car should contain a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze – check that yours is full and the mix is correct before winter puts a freeze on your travels.

3.Screenwash - To help contend with the fresh dirt and salt that does collect over the coming months, filling up your windscreen washer fluid will help you maintain a clear view of the road ahead. Remember to use special automotive fluid designed to resist freezing or your cleaning supplies will be rendered useless when cold weather strikes.

4.Wiper Blades – One thing the new season does promise is plenty of rain. If your wipers have been collecting dust and grime this summer, they are likely to need a good clean. You may even consider replacing them.
