Is It a Bird? Is It a Plane? No. It's a Flying Car of Course!

Futurists have been predicting its arrival since the last century. Now those predictions could really 'take off' with the news that US company Terrafugia are working to build a prototype flying car within 2 years - with volume production expected by 2024.

Named the TF-X, the firm's vision of the future has fold-out wings each with an electric motor. Powered by a 300 horsepower engine, cruising speed is expected to be around 200 mph (322 km/h), along with a 500-mile (805 km) flight range.

The planned four-person vehicle will use computer-controls so that passengers can simply type in a destination before taking off. In real terms this means you could leave London at 7am and arrive in Paris 90 minutes later to enjoy coffee and some freshly baked croissants - and have enough juice to get home again.

You may need to start saving now however as getting airborne will set you back around £183,000 - roughly the equivalent of 1000 budget airline flights from the UK to Europe.

Owners will need a pilot and a driver's licence to operate the road-legal airplane, in addition to having achieved 20 hours under their belt. Once those boxes are ticked, you'll be able to head down a motorway to your nearest airport, and then take off on a conventional runway.

Terrafugia said its aim is to provide 'true door-to-door transportation,' with the vehicle capable of being parked in a home garage like an ordinary car. Only time will tell if the futurists prediction will come true!
