The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) today announced that the Nissan Leaf has hit record sales in the UK making it the best-selling electric car for the second consecutive year.
Figures released today showed that 851 sales of the Leaf were made in September beating March's figure of 630 cars sold.
The Nissan Leaf which was the first 100% electric car to be built, has been proving a popular choice with drivers due to its efficiency and low running costs, something that many drivers are now taking into account when buying a new car. The Leaf which stands for Leading, Environmentally friendly, Affordable, Family car, has zero emissions and 169mpg making it economical and environmentally friendly.
The Leaf is powered by a lithium-ion battery which is located beneath the car to give more room inside the cabin. The Nissan leaf is also a practical car which makes it a popular choice for families; it has enough room to comfortably carry five passengers and has an increased luggage capacity.
The Leaf can be charged at any of the 15,000+ charging stations located throughout the UK, or at home.SMMT figures also showed that the British-built Nissan Leaf sold more than double that of its electric car competitors securing 68% share of the market. Last year's sales of the Leaf reached a respectable 1,812 units, this year though has been even better with an impressive 2,969 units sold already.
Paul O'Neill, EV Manager, Nissan Motor GB Limited said: “Sales of the all-electric Nissan LEAF continue to go from strength to strength and it's no surprise that the vehicle that pioneered the EV sector in the UK continues to blaze the trail for the rest of its class. "September's result gives us a clear indication that motorists are beginning to recognise that switching to a Nissan LEAF is not a compromise but an opportunity.
