Reports emerge of the Renault R.S.01 race car prototype

31st July 2014

With a single teaser image, Renault has sent rumours swirling around its new R.S.01 prototype racing car.

The model is anticipated to serve as the successor to the Renaultsport Mégane Trophy as a competing car in the World Series by Renault tournament.

A preview showing only the car's dynamic silhouette appeared earlier this year, and now the slimline LED rear lights and large rear diffuser on the R.S.01 can be glimpsed. From the glint of light revealing the curvy side panelling and wheel arches, it looks every inch a supercar. In name the model is also clearly inspired by the iconic Renault RS01 car from the 1970s, the first ever Formula One vehicle to compete fitted with a turbo engine.

Renault is promising that the racer will be 'spectacular'. It's widely expected to generate over 500bhp, and to be constructed with extensive carbon fibre, bespoke components and a new engine. The car should also make full use of a fluid seven-speed sequential gearbox, and Michelin has already been approached to develop specialist tyres.

The first full unveiling of the Renault R.S.01 will takeplace at the Moscow Motor Show on August 27. An initial track outing for the car has yet to be scheduled.
