What Tax Disc Abolition Means For You

9th September 2014

From 1st October 2014, the paper tax disc will no longer be issued, which means that you will no longer be required to display a valid tax disc. Tax discs will continue to be issued up to 30th September 2014, and will be valid for the period purchased.

However, depending on your vehicle, you will still be required to pay vehicle excise duty (VED). This can be done in one of three ways via direct debit – monthly, bi-annually or annually. The DVLA will keep a digital record of who has and has not paid, which will be linked with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) which is used for most on-road enforcement. There are discussions ongoing as to how this system will work for fleet customers.

The DVLA is making legislative changes which will mean that VED can no longer be transferred when a vehicle is sold or disposed of into the trade. The new registered keeper will therefore need to apply for a new VED prior to using the vehicle. This can be done online or at the post office with the vehicle registration document reference number (V5/C) which is included on the yellow new keeper part of the V5/C. When the DVLA are notified that a vehicle has been disposed of into the trade or sold to a new keeper, this will automatically trigger a refund of any VED.

If you require evidence that a vehicle has valid road tax in place, you can check at this government website:
