A ŠKODA R5 prototype debuts on the Rally Bohemia
14th July 2014
Over the weekend of July 12 and 13, 2014, an R5 prototype car from ŠKODA was previewed during the Rally Bohemia in the Czech Republic.
Until 1985 the competition was known as Rally ŠKODA, as it is contested on the brand's home turf, and models from the manufacturer always made a very strong showing. This year, ŠKODA vehicles have taken all three podium positions.
The R5 is a finely-tuned Fabia Super 2000, equipped with a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine to meet FIA R5 regulations. This high-performance prototype was demonstrated capably by the current FIA European Rally Championship leader, Esapekka Lappi.
He did not challenge the rally itself or set any lap times, instead showcasing the model over selected parts of the challenging track. It marked the first time that the R5 has been displayed to the general public.
When the car is fully prepared for competition, it will first enter the European Rally Championship. It's predicted that the R5 will be finalised in mid-2015 for the 2016 tournament season, and sources at ŠKODA confirm that development is progressing as planned. The model will also be a contender in other European and international competitions in due course.
