The experience
The current generation Lexus IS has undergone some minor style tweaks and emerged looking better than ever. There's a redesigned front bumper and grille along with neat new door mirrors with integrated indicator lamps. Round the back there's new light clusters and bumper. We're pleased to say it's still the same brilliant ride once you're inside though. Well damped and responsive, it sails over dodgy roads and bumps effortlessly and is pure joy for long distances. It's also a supremely practical vehicle, with a substantial 378 litre boot and plenty of room for five adults without ever feeling cramped in the back.
The performance
IS 250 models are available with a choice of petrol or diesel unit. The 200bhp 2.5 litre petrol V6 is smooth as velvet and performs the sprint in just 8 seconds then on to a top speed of 143mph. Fuel efficiency clocks in around the 28mpg mark, a respectable figure for a car of its class. The diesel option is a 175bhp 2.2 litre engine with six speed automatic transmission. Highly efficient and environmentally friendly, it produces just 148g/km of C02. The piece de resistance however is the mighty 5.0 litre V8 engine, offered with range topping IS-F models. With 417bhp and hurtling from 0 - 62 in under 5 seconds, it's an incredible piece of kit that stands up there with the best.
The technology
Once again Lexus has trumped their rivals by offering an outstanding level of standard kit. Even at the bottom of Lexus IS trim scale there's alloy wheels, remote keyless entry, climate control and a top notch 13 speaker sound system with CD interchanger. Scoot to the top and pick up sumptuous heated leather seats, rain sensing wipers, and rear parking sensors along the way.
