The Vauxhall Meriva is a small family car that is easy to drive, quiet comfortable and has clever rear-hinged doors that make access easy. It is a budget car, ideal for driving in the city and has a well-designed interior.
The Vauxhall Meriva comes with a choice of petrol and diesel engines, depending on the model chosen. The 1.4i 16v VVT (100PS) with manual five-speed gearbox is the entry level model. The maximum speed is 110 mph and the car accelerates from 0 mph to 60 mph in 13.9 seconds. Fuel consumption figures are 36.2 mpg (urban), 55.4 mpg (extra urban) and 46.3 mpg (combined); carbon emissions are 143 g/km. There is also a turbo version of this engine, either 120PS or 140PS, which offer livelier performance. The 140PS accelerates from 0-62 mph in 10.3 seconds. Both engines offer reasonably good fuel economy with combined fuel consumption figures of 47.9 mpg and 44.1 mpg respectively.
The diesel engines start with the 1.3 CDTi with 75 bhp. This engine offers good economy, 58 mpg, with low CO2 emissions, which also makes the car cheap to tax. The other diesel engines have greater pulling power, but are less economical. The 1,7 CDTi 16v (110PS) comes with an automatic six-speed gearbox.
The Vauxhall Meriva is a relaxing car to drive and its excellent all-round visibility makes parking easy. Its long wheel base gives it plenty of interior space and also improves its handling.
Inside, the Vauxhall Meriva has a feeling of quality. It is spacious and even at higher speeds there is little noise. The clever rear hinged doors are a very useful feature making fitting a child seat or getting into the rear seats easy. There is plenty of space in the boot, but for extra carrying space the rear seats slide forward and neatly fold flat.
The Vauxhall Meriva models have a good level of equipment fitted as standard. The Expression model has flex floor, Cd/MP3 CD player/stereo radio, electric front windows, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, remote controlled central deadlocking, adjustable driver seat, adjustable steering column, Aux-in socket and electric parking brake. The higher spec models have additional features, such as cruise control, remote security alarm, front fog lamps, air-conditioning, carbon flash roof, tinted glass, mobile phone system, multi-function trip compute, alloy wheels and panoramic glass sun roof (SE model only).
The cars also have a range of optional accessories, including tow bars, roof boxes, aluminium base carriers, rear parking sensors and privacy shades.
SafetyIn Euro NCAP crash tests the Vauxhall Meriva received a five-star rating.
