It’s just been announced that Vauxhall will integrate the OnStar intelligent communications system with every future new vehicle. Entry-level models will offer the technology as an option, with it becoming a standard feature at higher equipment grades.
The technology has been developed by umbrella group General Motors, and has already been a success in the North American and Chinese markets. More than 6.5 million customers in the regions are already subscribed to OnStar services.
Using 4G connectivity and telephone services, the OnStar system links to the car’s on-board computer. This enables hands-free calls on the move, emergency assistance, navigation and even exclusive concierge services accessible from the cabin.
Another key advantage for drivers should be a resulting drop in their insurance premiums. Similarly to the ‘black box’ used to monitor newer drivers, owners can optionally consent to be tracked by insurers in exchange for a lower rate. It will be possible to check whether the car is locked and to lock it remotely, even while abroad, and stolen vehicles can be easily tracked by the police.
Some OnStar services will be available on subscription at a very competitive rate, following an initial period of free usage. The first car to receive the upgrade will be the new Vauxhall Corsa – more information on the model is expected very soon.
