Volkswagen officially reveals the eighth-generation Passat

4th July 2014

A new Volkswagen Passat – the eighth generation of the model – has now been officially unveiled by the manufacturer.

It’s intended to claim a more premium look and atmosphere than previous versions, and has been styled with ‘softer’ body lines. In line with the updated VW design language, swept-back headlights, a three-bar chrome grille and chromed twin exhaust pipes all feature. The new Passat also sits almost 1.5cm closer to the road.

As a result, passengers enjoy an increase in personal space - and 47 litres of extra luggage capacity in the estate car version. At the driver’s position the traditional instrument cluster style can be optionally replaced with a 12.3-inch TFT screen. All versions of the model will receive a new, separate 6.5-inch full colour display integrated with the centre console.

Engine options for the model range have likewise been enhanced, now including an impressive top-end 2.0-litre BiTurbo diesel engine at 237bhp and 500Nm of torque. Across the line-up fuel consumption is reduced by as much as 20 percent.

The European premiere of the new Passat will take place on Volkswagen’s stand at the Paris Motor Show in October 2014. UK drivers can look forward to a plug-in hybrid version of the car, which will be available shortly after the official launch date.
