What is an ex demo car?
When it comes to buying a car there are many options to consider. In years gone by, there was often a very straight choice between buying a new or a used car. However, in more recent times, there has been huge growth in the number of buyers considering buying nearly-new or ex-demo vehicles. These are cars that dealerships have previously used as display models in their showrooms. They are likely to have been driven by potential customers on test drives or dealership staff, and could have a few thousand miles on the clock. Thus, these 'ex-demonstrator' models are then sold at discounted prices.
Advantages of buying an ex-demonstrator car
Best possible condition - An ex-demo car will have been kept in the best possible condition and should have no visual faults.
No previous owners - Unlike a used car, an ex-demo car won't have had any previous owners meaning the car will be in the same condition as when it was brand new and will have a lot less miles on the clock.
Often higher spec cars - Many dealerships will want to showcase the best aspects of a model, the ex-demo car is generally chosen with its best features and systems. Some, many or all of these may be optional extras and upgrades you won't find in the standard version.
Potential for big discounts - You could be getting a great deal on a nearly new car.
Some key aspects to consider
Remember to check who the car is registered to - If it has been registered with a previous owner make sure you get a V5C certificate.
Check the age of the car - An ex-demo car should have very little mileage on it as it's spent the majority of its time in the showroom on display. There may be some miles on the clock but these will probably be delivery miles. If the car does have a lot of mileage, ask the dealer why this is.
Research into the model you are interested in - If there’s a brand new model about to be released it gives you a better chance of haggling on the price, as the dealer will want it sold before the new model arrives.
