The Best Family Cars for 'Real mpg' Figures

Official figures for urban, combined and extra-urban mpg on new cars are generally provided by the manufacturer online and in the brochure. Where there are disclaimers that these figures were achieved under strict testing, drivers may be left wondering what the real-world road mpg of their vehicle actually is.

Motoring website Honest John invites drivers to submit their own figures for comparison, and family cars notably perform better than the rest by achieving an average 91 percent of their stated peak mpg. Some of the top performers in the family car class are:

  • Volvo V70 and XC70 the models share their engine range, and are some of the highest performers in economy as well as trademark Volvo safety.
  • ŠKODA Superb this aptly-named car sticks very closely to the manufacturer's figures. Pick a GreenLine version for even greater efficiency.
  • SEAT Toledo in almost every case, the Toledo hits its average mpg right on the nose. The generous interior space is another plus.
  • Ford Mondeo the Mondeo's average mpg is naturally a little higher in the diesel versions and reassuringly strong across the board.
  • Honda Accord some drivers have reported that their average mpg in an Accord is 109 percent of Honda's own figure.

You can choose all of the above models from one of our authorised Lookers dealerships across the UK. We have a selection of cars that are capable of delivering over 60mpg here. Get in touch with your closest team to find out more.
