As part of Road Safety Week, Lookers are running a series of articles dedicated to road safety, offering advice and tips on staying safe while driving. As part of our series we have taken a look at some of the safest cars in the UK, ranging from SUV's to hatchbacks. We have used Euro NCAP ratings to distinguish the safest cars as well as looking at what safety features they provide:
Volvo cars have a reputation as some of the safest on the road and the stylish Volvo V40 is certainly that. The V40 scored the full 5 stars in its 2012 Euro NCAP rating, with the adult protection scoring a very impressive 98%, as well as scoring 75% for child protection and 88% for pedestrian protection. What makes the Volvo V40 stand out is its City Safety system which includes emergency brake assist, this helped them score 100% in the Euro NCAP safety assist section, something that doesn't happen very often. Other safety features include multiple airbags including one under the bonnet to protect the windscreen.
The Vauxhall Mokka is a crossover SUV that looks great, drives great and is one of the safest SUV's on the road. In its Euro NCAP test it scored a maximum 5 points, as well as scoring 96% for adult protection, and 90% for child protection. Safety features of the Mokka include stability control, traction control, front, side and curtain airbags, all ,of which helped the Mokka score the maximum 100% for NCAP's safety assist test. The Mokka is a great family car that provides first class protection for all passengers.
Winner of World Car of the Year 2014 the Audi A3 is practical, stylish and most importantly safe. The A3 scored a maximum 5 stars in its 2012 Euro NCAP rating, securing an impressive 95% for adults protection, 87% for child protections and 86% for safety assist. The Audi A3 comes with multiple airbags, stability control and deadlock and alarms to ward off burglars.
The Renault Clio was first launched in 1990, and who can forget the famous Papa and Nicole advertisement for it? Today the Clio is one of the safest and smartest superminis on the road having secured a maximum 5 star Euro NCAP rating in 2012. For adult protection it scored 88% and for child protection an excellent 89%. The Clio's safety features such as electronic stability control, anti-whiplash head restraints and ESP scored it 99% for safety assist.
The Ford Kuga is a car that has everything you need in a small SUV, it has great handling, innovative styling and is extremely safe to drive. It was crash tested by Euro NCAP in 2012 and scored 94% for adult protection, 86% for child protection, and 70% for pedestrians. The Kuga offers an excellent array of safety features including stability control, seven airbags, and emergency brake assist, all which helped it gain a score of 100% in Euro NCAP's safety assist.
