Brazil’s postal system tests Renault electric vehicles

30th June 2014

Brazil Post is putting electric vehicles from Renault to the test on their delivery rounds. The Brazilian postal operator is one of the biggest in the world, and has recently taken delivery of a new Kangoo ZE.

Over the four-month trial, the model is expected to demonstrate its high-suitability to parcel deliveries and city runs. It will be used in several areas of the federal capital Brasilia, with a second test vehicle near to Renault's Brazilian headquarters in Curitiba. The trial of the vehicles is strongly expected to be continued for a full 12 months.

At Brazil Post, there are ambitious plans to reduce the overall CO2 emissions from their vehicle fleet. Their postal workers serve the fifth-biggest country in the world by population and area, and they deliver over nine billion items a year with the help of almost 20,000 vehicles. The goal is to bring the emissions figure down by 20 percent before the end of the decade.

The Kangoo ZE is a full electric version of the Kangoo, a commercial vehicle with a maximum payload of 650kg. It produces the equivalent of 60bhp, and can travel as far as 106 miles on a full charge. Several other international postal services are either trialling or using the Kangoo ZE, with more expected to follow.
