A tiptronic transmission can function in the same way as a conventional type of automatic transmission, but crucially also offers the driver an additional method of manually overriding the automatic shift changes. In turn this delivers outstanding driveability.
In practical terms tiptronic cars allow the driver override the automatic mode by moving the gear stick into a second (tiptronic) shift gate. Some cars also include a dynamic shift program (DSP), which intelligently calculates the optimal gear. This means that the gearbox control unit selects the best gear at all times, drawing data from the engine map and the current driving situation. The selection takes into account the speed, weight and the vehicle’s trajectory.
