Volkswagen has announced its intention to create five-seat and seven-seat versions of the Tiguan compact SUV for a 2016 model year release.
A prototype version of the second-generation Tiguan has already been revealed and is known to be undergoing comprehensive testing. The five-seater will be based on a similar wheelbase length to the current model, and is anticipated to launch with a varied selection of petrol and diesel engines.
Volkswagen intends to push the seven-seat SUV more strongly in markets outside of Europe, yet will still offer the model here to increase its upmarket positioning. It will also stand on the manufacturer’s flexible MQB platform and arrive with similar engine options. Some equipment levels will offer the option of 4Motion all-wheel drive alongside the standard front-wheel drive configuration.
The official unveiling of the new Volkswagen Tiguan is expected at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. Sales of the model in the UK should follow shortly afterwards, and a petrol-electric hybrid is in development for launch at a later date.
