Meandering Mid-England

Explore the stark contrast between steelworks and stately homes

A journey from the foot of the Peak District in Derbyshire to Northamptonshire and on to Suffolk offers so much in the way of opportunity. The beginning of the trip is nestled deep in a market town moulded by its relationship with the industrial revolution. Visitors will soon recognise the remnants of that period which have been laid to rest here, from the Victorian market hall, which is open five days a week, to the great canal, that incorporates an impressive 2,880ft tunnel. Cross the county border into Northamptonshire and you’ll be just as quick to notice the contrast.

What was Derbyshire’s red brick and steelworks becomes beautiful parks, architectural treasures, and stunning stately homes in the more southern county.
