Contrast
This journey will take you from the town at the other side of the water, Gateshead, through the countryside, and down towards the beautiful seaside town of Tynemouth.
Beamish
After visiting various Scandinavian folk museums in the 1950s, Dr Frank Atkinson realised that he needed to do something that would help the North East of England retain its rich industrial heritage. Coal mining, ship building, and manufacturing were all being forgotten until Frank established Beamish, the living museum of the north. A colliery lamp cabin, a pit village, and pony stables are just some of the attractions featured at the museum.
BALTIC
The BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art sits on the edge of the Tyne river, just beside the bridge. The largest contemporary art institution in the UK, BALTIC’s mission is simple, “to create a greater understanding of the world through outstanding, experimental, and inspiring contemporary art which has power, relevance, and meaning for individuals and communities.” Home to 2,600 square metres of art space, this venue regularly hosts exhibitions which tackles current and topical issues.
