Skoda Octavia

For those looking for optimal boot space the cleverly designed Skoda Octavia could be just the answer. Looking like a saloon but ingeniously offering a large rear hatch that offers easy access to its class-leading 590-litre boot, the Octavia even with the boot full, delivers more than enough room for five people in its well-constructed cabin.

Not only does the boot rise to the occasion the interior also doesn’t disappoint and offers a host of useful cubby holes and features – ideal for growing families or even business use. For those who look for the reassurance of established brands, a confidence boost may come from the fact that the Octavia shares numerous chassis and suspension parts with the VW Golf. On the road – and in the real world - this means drivers can expect equal reliability. A range of efficient yet powerful engines help it cruise comfortable and quietly, too.

Citroen Grand Picasso MPV

For those with a long wish list which includes a practical yet flexible layout, stylish design and large boot space, the Citroen Grand Picasso MPV ticks all the boxes. With five seats in place, its 793-litre-boot, is not the only feature to recommend it to demanding drivers. Beautifully designed – its sleek lines making it arguably one of the most attractive MPV’s on the road - it’s also one of the cheapest to run.

The Grand Picasso’s 1.6-litre BlueHDi diesel engine is road-tax-exempt and can deliver 74.3mpg. The drive is comfortable and relaxing, not to mention extremely practical, while third-row seats are functional and very useful. The interior is modern and stylish with lots of handy features including touchscreen technology. The standard equipment list is generous, while a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating adds reassurance for families.

Fiat Doblo MPV

For those who favour function over form, the Doblo delivers exceptional value for money. This spacious MPV’s 790-litre boot works out at around only £17 per litre and for those who place space at the top of their priorities, it’s then even easier to overlook the Fiat’s boxy looks and van-based mechanicals. It’s this car/van hybrid design that is so appealling to a wide range of drivers.

With the rear seats removed, the van render comes into play, and the Doblo has an incredible 3,200 litres of load space – perfect for transporting furniture, boxes or even dogs! The boot’s sturdy parcel shelf, meanwhile, can support an impressive 70kg, and you can even specify the Doblo with seven seats if you need to carry six passengers from time to time.

Mercedes V-Class

If size matters to you then then the simply gigantic Mercedes V is worth a look. Equipped to feel like a premium MPV, the V-Class – when specified in long wheelbase, six-seat format – delivers an incredible 1,030 litres of load space. In context this means it’s more than three times bigger than a supermini such as the Skoda Fabia. In order to facilitate easy loading, the boot opening itself is wide, square and low. Highly versatile, if seats are removed it is transformed into a van for when the occasion demands additional capacity.

Plenty of equipment comes as standard even on the entry-level SE. This includes sat-nav, Bluetooth, parking sensors with a reversing camera to help with those tricky manoeuvres, heated seats and crosswind assist.

Honda Civic

Made in Britain, the tenth-generation Civic looks as streamlined as its predecessor. With an all-new platform, engineers have been able to completely update the way the hatchback drives. Body control is very good and its handling engaging. The Civic comes with a generous 478-litre boot and a roomy interior with generous levels of plush trim. Offering tremendous versatility, you’ll find Honda’s ingenious magic seat system allows drivers to flip up the rear seat bases to carry a variety of items with ease.

Drivers can select from a range of modes. Have a bay tree to get home from the garden centre? Select tall mode. Bought a chest of drawers from Ebay and need to get them home safely. Use utility mode. You get the picture (and for that you could opt for long mode!)

Top marks for versatility then.
