What is Motability?

The Lookers Motability Scheme helps disabled people - both drivers and passengers - get about by exchanging the mobility allowance for a lease car.

The monthly payments include the cost of the lease, servicing and maintenance, and in many cases, the adaptations you have added when taking out the agreement. It's motoring, just much simpler.

What is the advance payment?

This is the amount you'll pay upfront, in addition to your monthly payments.

Your Motability allowance alone may not cover the entire cost for the larger or more expensive models on the scheme - these are the models that require an advance payment.

The advance payment is worked out by considering several factors such as the cars worth, its servicing and maintenance, and expected value at the end of the three-year agreement. It's also worth noting that this payment is not a deposit, so it's not refundable once it's been paid.

Who can drive a Motability car?

The lease includes insurance for up to two named drivers, which can be claimed by you, friends, family or even carers. If needed, a third driver can be added for an additional cost.

All drivers must meet both the scheme's and the RSA Motability's criteria, and must be listed as permitted drivers on the Certificate of Motor Insurance to drive the car. If the disabled customer isn't one of the drivers, they don't need to be in the car for every journey, but each journey must benefit the customer.

This could be through shopping or other routine activities, for example.

What's included in the Motability lease?

The Lookers Motability Scheme lets you exchange your mobility allowance for a lease agreement on a new car, either completely or in part.

The monthly payments vary depending on which model you opt for, but all agreements include:

  • Insurance cover from RSA Motability

  • Servicing and Maintenance

  • A range of adaptations*

  • Full breakdown assistance

  • Up to two named drivers

  • Tyre repair and replacement

  • Windscreen repair

  • MOTs and road tax

  • 60,000 mileage allowance over 3 years (additional mileage charged at 5p per mile)

*Many of the Motability adaptations are available at no charge, but some may require an extra payment.
