Exterior
The E-Class bears many styling cues from the latest version of its S-Class sibling. Sharply-defined bodywork is accompanied by an eye-catching front grille that features the iconic Mercedes-Benz insignia flanked by two chrome bars. Additional elegance comes in the form of 17”, 18” or 19” alloy wheels (depending on the trim level) and a distinctive light signature, with uniquely calibrated LED lights on the front and rear further reinforcing the contemporary, executive look.
Interior
High-quality materials are used throughout the cabin, complemented by sumptuous leather upholstery and ambient lighting with 64 different settings. The characterful wraparound dashboard is thoughtfully designed with an eye-pleasing metallic finish; meanwhile the controls are easy to use and benefit from their intuitive layout, despite the vast array of functions at your fingertips.
Standard features include satellite navigation and a DAB digital radio inside every model. Optional extras (standard on the E350d trim and above) include a 12.3” colour display, through which you can access the numerous navigation and infotainment functions of the COMAND Online system.
Engines and performance
Each engine available with the E-Class combines a vigorous turn of pace with impressive fuel economy and low carbon emissions.
The E220 BlueTEC petrol unit, which launches the car from 0-62mph in 7.3 seconds, also returns impressive combined fuel economy of 72.4mpg and carbon output of just 102g/km – meaning only £20 of Vehicle Excise Duty a year. For those in search of even more power, the E350d six-cylinder diesel engine can thrust the vehicle from 0-62mph in just 5.9 seconds. Smooth, progressive acceleration is enabled by the manufacturer’s 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission. Meanwhile the five different driving modes (Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual) allow you to tailor the car’s driving characteristics to your current preferences.
Safety and technology
Safety is a key focus for the E-Class, and a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating makes the saloon one of the safest on the road. Seven airbags and a high-tensile steel structure ensure maximum protection for occupants in the event of a collision. The car’s active safety features, moreover, are aimed at preventing such a situation; these include such functions as Attention Assist (which sounds a warning when signs of driver fatigue are detected) and Active Brake Assist (which automatically applies the brakes to avoid low-speed collisions).
