National Apprenticeship Week for our Female Apprentices

Roll up! Roll up! Pick a question, any question!

In a lucky-dip style quizzical activity ahead of International Women’s Day tomorrow, we scribbled a swift list of quirky questions to draw at random from a hat and we were just in time for a catch up with our female apprentices.

Here was the result…

Hayley Jevons, Apprentice Technician, Liverpool South Vauxhall

1. Any memorable moments from when you passed your driving test?
My first car was a shiny new Vauxhall Corsa! I remember going on tons of test drives before I decided that the model was the best fit for me. I based my choice on overall performance and comfort.

2. Would you say you’re the ‘sporty’ type?
I find myself taking a trip to the tennis courts to play matches with friends on a regular basis and due to the recent warm weather we’ve been having, I’ve been visiting as much possible!

3. Where was the last place you visited?
I went for a walk around the gorgeous Hilbre Islands in the Wirral. It’s beautiful to watch the tide go in and out and it’s a prime location for spotting wildlife.

Chelsea Bayley, Apprentice Technician, Crewe BMW

1. Have you been to any car events, shows or exhibitions outside of work? It was my friends at college who initially got me into going to car shows. At the first exhibition that I went to, I remember falling in love with the BMW E30 M3, its modern look and the racing history it holds.

2. Would you say you’re the ‘sporty’ type? I go trampolining in my spare time and try to keep fit through this. I’ve participated in competitions in and around Cheshire in the past, but I treat it more as a hobby now.

3. What words of wisdom would you give to someone looking for an apprenticeship? I’d say make sure that you set yourself goals so that you can work towards them one step at a time and end up where you want to be in life. I love working and I have learned a lot so far at Lookers!

Rebecca Brown, Apprentice Technician, Selly Oak Vauxhall

1. Which car are you MOST crackers about? Models wise, I love MINIs and BMWs. I really enjoy driving my new model MINI in sheeny orange, but I’m in awe of the retro look of cars. I definitely prefer the old-school style classic MINI and I’d love to own one at some point in the future!

2. Do you have any pets? I have an early start each morning as I’m up at around 5am to go see my horse, Maggie, who I’ve kept for four years now. I also have a dog called Honey and two rabbits!

3. Thinking back to your first EVER time behind the wheel, how did you take to being a learner driver? I didn’t really have any problems with the practical side of learning to drive, it all went quite smoothly. It was memorising and learning the theory that was the most challenging part for me.

But are hobbies really JUST pastimes? Or do they serve more purpose?

Are the skills that we learn in our leisure time transferable to roles at Lookers and in our careers?

According to Sam McLaughlin, Apprentice Technician from Camberley Audi, the answer is:

YES!

Chatting about her hobbies, Sam said:

I’m enrolled on a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) course outside of work and I’m currently gaining practical experience as an Assistant Instructor. Through being responsible for taking health and safety precautions and overseeing the abilities of others for dry-land and on-water drills, I’ve learned valuable leadership and communication skills which help me in the workplace and at Lookers.

All of the members mentioned above are part of a Female Apprentice Network at Lookers. The last meet-up was a social shindig and struck up some healthy competition at a zippy go-karting track in Manchester.

If you’re interested in applying for an apprentice role at Lookers, or know someone who might be, you can browse opportunities here.

Join us on the blog tomorrow where we’ll be chatting to some more of female team members and apprentices for International Women’s Day.
