How we're steering more women towards Lookers and the motor trade
“I’m here today to talk you about some exciting roles and a rewarding career within an industry you may not have considered before”, said Adam Carney, Group Diversity Manager, while speaking to Whalley Range 11-18 Girls’ School (WRHS) just yesterday.
Contrary to the belief that only practical roles exist and brought to light by our diversity manager during his talk, girls could have a suitable skill set which would excel further in a wide range of enriching roles within the industry.
Running adjacent to the 30% Club, which exerts to grow the number of women on FTSE-100 boards to a minimum of 30%, is the UK Automotive 30% Club and 30:30:30 campaign. Set up in collaboration with education charity Speakers for Schools, the UK Automotive 30% Club campaign will see 30 industry leaders give speeches to 30 secondary schools across the country, followed by 30 executive job shadowing placements for selected students.
Imprinted proudly on the walls around the school was; “We strive to educate, inspire and empower young women to be the next generation leaders”, and a perpetual future for Lookers was one of the main themes of Adam’s talk. Our Group Diversity Manager discussed digital sales and eCommerce and connected, self-driving and electric cars, plus non-traditional roles in our motor group such as marketing, IT, finance and HR.
Encouraging girls to apply for our Executive Placement, Adam spoke about two of our apprentices on their Lookers journey and how our 700 apprenticeships across the large business allow us to shape future talent. Our company achievements, such as Dealer Group of the Year and CEO of the Year in 2016, were also highlighted.
Speaking of the event, Adam said; “We want to inspire girls and women to open their minds to a career within the motor trade and we hope this morning has offered a helpful and thought-provoking insight into the diverse range of opportunities available at Lookers and within the industry.”
