Do I get protected no claims with Motability?

As motability vehicles are owned by Motability Operations Ltd, you will not be entitled to protected no claims.

If you have had an insurance policy prior to leasing a motability vehicle which had no claims it unlikely that insurers post termination of your motability policy will accept this – however, it is wort checking. You may also request a letter of no claims from RSAM (RSA Motability) which details your period of driving with the motability scheme, something which new insurers may accept – contact RSAM to do so.

What restrictions are there for young drivers coming onto the scheme?

On the Certificate of Motor Insurance, only one driver under the age of 21 is entitled to be detailed. This driver can either be the owner of the agreement – the disabled customer — or another individual living and registered at the same address. Anyone other than the customer on the policy, that is under the age of 21, must have a full license.

Furthermore, drivers under the age of 25 on the insurance policy are restricted to vehicles with an output of 125bhp or less and an ABI insurance group of 16 or less.

Who can I put on the insurance?

Your family, friends, or carers can all be put on your insurance however, the use of the vehicle does always have to be of benefit to the disabled person. This does not mean that they must be in the vehicle on every journey.

The worry-free Motability scheme package includes two additional drivers as standard, while one further driver can be added at an additional cost.

All named drivers must meet the requirements specified and must agree to all the Motability scheme guidelines.

Similarly, each of the drivers must hold a full UK driving license. Those who hold a non-UK license will be subject to additional checks.

Can you get two cars on Motability?

No. Through the Motability scheme it is only possible to get one vehicle, as the allowance is used to supplement the cost of the lease.

The number of non-Motability cars at a household will not impact eligibility and two people at the same household can apply for the scheme if they meet the criteria.

How can I check the dimensions of a vehicle to make sure it suits my needs?

If you visit the Motability scheme website you will be able to access a Car Search tool which allows you to determine the right vehicle for you.

Refine your search by the angle in which the door opens; the seat height; the width of the door; the length of the booth; and the amount of headroom.
