Vauxhall has announced a commitment to the future of electric vehicles with a successor to the Ampera – and also officially confirmed a new city car.
The news was announced in a series of tweets from the Twitter account of Vauxhall/Opel leader Karl-Thomas Neumann.
The city model would join the Vauxhall range below the compact ADAM. It had previously been rumoured as one of the new vehicles debuting in 2015, and has only just been verified by Vauxhall. A recently unveiled 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine should also launch with the compact car.
As for the new EV, it has previously been mooted as the revival of the iconic Vauxhall Viva model name. It could either be a full electric rival to the Nissan LEAF or a range-extended with a petrol engine just like the Ampera. The entry-level cost of the new electric car is also set to be reduced, making renewable energy motoring more accessible to drivers.
Both cars form part of Vauxhall’s recent model offensive: a plan to launch 27 new vehicles between now and 2018. The first – the updated new Corsa supermini – has already arrived in showrooms. No other new Vauxhall cars are anticipated to debut this year.
