For the first time ever the Audi S5 has a V6 diesel under the hood producing 347hp and up to 700Nm of torque to the crankshaft. The 3.0 TDI in the S5 models is the most powerful version of the Audi V6 diesel engines, but despite this it consumes on average 19% less fuel that its predecessors with gasoline engines even though it produces significantly more torque. It's well suited for agility, spontaneity, low fuel consumption and long range with a suitably resonant sound to match. Acceleration in the Audi S5 Coupe TDI takes only 4.8 seconds to 62mph, 4.9 seconds in the Sportback, with both reaching an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.
An Electric Powered Compressor and mild hybrid (MHEV) system are integrated in the standard 48-volt main electrical circuit. The EPC helps provide lower engine speeds and less frequent downshifts during more relaxed driving thanks to its ability to increase torque at the lower end of the rpm range. From a standing start the new S5 models are able to quickly move several meters ahead of comparable vehicles without a EPC. The MHEV can reduce fuel consumption by up to 0.4 litres per 100km. The engine management system decides whether coasting, freewheeling or recuperation is the most efficient in each driving situation.
The 3.0 TDI engine transmits its power to a smooth-shifting eight-speed tiptronic with lower gears that feature short, close ratios and long upper gears to reduce revs and fuel consumption. The quattro permanent all-wheel drive then transfers this power to the wheels ensuring a stable drive.
