The entire North East heard wedding bells on Friday, when Metro Radio competition winners Barry and Rachael said ‘I do’. The lucky couple in love won a wedding with a twist on 9 th September, at the stunning Slaley Hall in Northumberland.
When Steve and Karen’s Wedding Planners announced that they wanted couples to register online with their reasons to tie the knot, Barry Walker and Rachael Martin from Boldon never expected to win out of the hundreds of entrants. The self-employed bricklayer and high street shop assistant manager are lifelong friends, have been together for three years and got engaged last year, with no plans in place to make it to the altar.
Baby boy Jackson came along eight months ago and ever since, Barry and Rachael hadn’t had the time or the money to get married – but that’s where Metro Radio came in, making their dream of a magical wedding come true. But it wasn’t just any wedding.
Metro Radio listeners had the chance to choose a few key elements of Rachael and Barry’s big day, voting for their favourite options for the couple’s wedding cake, wedding rings, wedding ceremony song and transport - and Lookers Ford were chosen to provide the wedding cars!
Sales Executives Terry Kennedy and Dan Cameron from Lookers Ford Sunderland drove the couple to Slaley Hall in ‘His and Hers’ Mustangs, Barry in an athletic red Fastback and Rachael in a classy white Convertible.
Even though the power was in the public’s hands, they clearly listened to what the couple wished for, selecting wedding bands rather than skull rings or Haribo sweet rings, plus they resisted the urge to select Bob the Builder over the more romantic ‘A Thousand Years’ by Christina Perri as the song for Rachael to walk down the aisle to. As for the wedding cake, radio listeners voted for the bride and groom’s dream cake.
As part of the prize, the lucky couple also received Rachael’s wedding dress and hair and make-up, which looked absolutely stunning, the ceremony and venue hire, welcome drinks and canapés, a four-course wedding breakfast with drinks, a traditional evening buffet, the DJ, wedding suite accommodation and breakfast for the bride and groom, and much, much more.
