Government Plug-In Vehicle Grant
The plug-in vehicle grant offers 20% off the price of an electric van, up to a maximum of £8,000. Vans qualify for the grant if they have emissions of 75g/km or less and a range of at least 60 miles for full electric vehicles or at least 10 miles for hybrid vehicles.
Workplace Charging Scheme
Businesses are also able to apply for the Workplace Charging Scheme. This can dramatically reduce the costs associated with installing chargers at your business’ premises. If your business has sufficient off-street parking, you can receive up to £350 off the price of each installation for up to 40 charge points.
Easier Maintenance
With far fewer components to identify, investigate and source replacements for, servicing an electric vehicle is simpler and cheaper. Plus, even though batteries have a very long lifespan, they are often still covered by generous warranties that protect against unexpected costs in the short and medium term.
Charging your Electric Vehicle
Home Charging
You can charge an electric vehicle using a standard 3-pin plug. For best results, it’s better to have a wall box installed. These high voltage boxes are surprisingly affordable to install with an Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) grant providing up to £350 towards the cost of purchase and installation. A wall box provides you with up to 55% higher charging performance, making it much quicker than charging via a domestic socket.
Charging on the go
With an ever-increasing network of public chargers, finding a place to charge if you’re running low on power is becoming much easier. According to Zap Map, there are now 31,000 charging points across 11,000 different locations across the UK.
Paying for the electricity you take from a public charge point is straightforward. Mostly you’ll be charged via an app or RFID card. Contactless bank card payments are also becoming more and more common across many networks. Some charging points are free, but you should expect to pay to use most fast and rapid chargers.
