When choosing a car, one of the first things drivers weigh up is the type of transmission to suit their needs. An automatic transmission will manage gear changes for the driver and automatic cars do not have a clutch pedal making them easier to drive. Many opt for an automatic transmission as they do not need to think about when to change gear and don't have to wrestle with getting the 'bite point' of the clutch and acceleration right.
The gear lever layout also differs in automatic cars from the manual gear lever and is displayed as follows:
P (parking) – R (reverse) – N (neutral) – D (drive) – 2 (2nd gear) – 1 (1st gear).
